Shower Seats

The addition of a shower seat to your shower enclosure area can provide an extra element of comfort and independent living for those in need of some extra support, although it can be a welcome addition for anyone.

A number of seats are available on the bathroom market, including both floor-standing ‘temporary’ and wall-mounted ‘permanent’ models.

When considering your shower seat purchase, it is important to consider who might share the enclosure, and what the needs of those different individuals might be.

A robust and sturdy wall mounted seat may be ideal, to avoid the fuss of having to remove a floor standing version at times when it’s not needed and may be in the way. Designs are available that incorporate a hinge (some even boast a ‘soft close’ mechanism) thus creating a folding shower seat which allow the user to fold the seat down when they’re done, and really maximise the shower space.

You should always check the weight capacity before you buy, and ask a professional to install the seat for you. They will be able to advise on what wall the seat should be mounted to.

Plastic seats are tough, comfortable and easy to clean, though wooden and even removable fabric covered versions are also available. Wooden slatted seats may be preferred as they allow the water to drain away rather than forming a puddle. Versions with padded back and arm rests, or corner shower seat designs can also be bought.

Some seats allow for adjustments in height, and of course wall-mounted versions may be hung at different levels depending on the specific requirements of the user.

A floor-standing shower seat or shower chair will not need any time-consuming or costly installation and can of course be removed entirely when not in use. Check for non-slip feet which will prevent unwanted movement.

Shower seats enable the disabled or those with mobility problems to experience the pleasure of showering.
